Sit or Stand

Back in early summer of '75, still living in Florence, Al, we had been married a year and a few months. We had moved to a little cottage. It seemed back in the woods to this city girl. It was a cute little greenish  house (1 bdrm), it sat a good ways off the road and it had a huge yard. Oblivious, we didn't see the yard 'cause after a month that thing needed mowing. Guess what??? No lawn mower. As I've heard my daddy say, we didn't have a pot to pee in or a window to throw it out. Just living on love!! Back then Florence didn't have a mall so Sears was located down town. We put on our best clothes (Lol) and got all excited 'cause we were gonna make our first Big purchase. I guess I was more excited about a mower than he was 'cause that was one of the three things I could do before I got married, mow. You see he knew what he was gettin'. There had been  many a day (back home) when he came for a short visit, before he went to work, and there I sat ri

Evening in Iuka

This title is a little misleading, but I love it. Growing up we didn't do a lot of shopping for clothes 'cause my mama or my grandmother (Mama Helen) would make my clothes. We did a lot of shopping for material. We really didn't have malls, but you could order from the J C Penneys or Sears catalog. Now, we only did that around Christmastime (best I can remember). I can remember taking home economics in school but that didn't stick, couldn't sew or cook. Sammy didn't find that out until after we got married. Thank Goodness! I guess I'm telling off on myself but I had never had any perfume of my own. Oh my grandmothers had some and when I'd go over to see them I might splash a little on.  I'd wash it off before I went home 'cause Mama had Asthma and she'd have a spell if it was strong. I really didn't need any 'cause all I did was play ball and deodorant was good enough but when you start dating....smelling good is important, I thoug

Wishing You and Yours a "Happy Valentine" As long as I can remember Sammy always loved Valentine's but who doesn't. It's funny when I try to think of dates I try to remember how many kids we had at the time. Y'all ever do that? I remember this story well. I know we had Nikki, Beth, and Jay. Sammy always made sure we got flowers, balloons, candy, or jewelry. (Kinsley wasn't even a thought but looking back... maybe she was) HA!! Valentines was coming up and I was trying to come up with something different. Instead of going out to eat, a movie, or candy/card thing. You know I wanted to come up with something he would never ever think of and I gotta tell ya, I out did myself! One day I was looking through the J C Penney's catalog and came across (y'all don't laugh) this model with these black silk pajamas on. Oh My Goodness!!! He looked so good in them, so I thought I'd order my man a pair. I could hardly wait till Valentine's night so

My Lil' Cupids

Have y'all ever been home alone and started talking to yourself?  Lord, I hope I'm not the only one! Y'all are gonna think I'm crazy but this really happened. When Jay passed away I would go in his room and dust, vacuum, or just cry after the girls left for school and Kinsley was down for a nap. After about 3 months every time I'd go in his room (for some reason), I thought I needed to wash the bed skirt on his bed. Now how crazy is that....a bed skirt????  One day I couldn't take it any longer so I decided I'd wash it. Jay had a twin water (mattress) on his bed. It wasn't completely full, maybe 3/4 full. I took all the covers off but the mattress would not budge, too heavy. I tried several times but nothing. Finally I leaned back on my heels and looked up and said, Ok, I need someone to help me, if I'm gonna wash this thing. I even tried pulling the skirt underneath the mattress but nothing. I thought I'd give the mattress one more try.  Well,
