Riding to school

Image
I was taking my nephew (Logan) to school this morning, as I have since he was 5 years old and I was remembering back when all my kids were in school. Kinsley was just a baby and the other three were going to three different schools ( elementary, middle & high school)  so we had to leave a little early to make the rounds. Some mornings I'd be in such a hurry I'd have my pajamas pants on with a sweat shirt pulled over my pajama top just in case I had car trouble and I had to walk. HA! Several mornings I'd forget to brush my hair which was a little scary and the kids would wont me to let them out at the road just before turning in at their school. Thought I'd share a couple of interesting rides. One year (maybe 1st or 2nd grade) Jays class had to dress up like their favorite singer. Well, ole Jay wanted to be Willie Nelson. I'm not real sure if he even knew anything about Willie just that he liked his hair. Back in the 70s Willie had an album called, "Sho

Baseball.....Baby

Y'all remember that ball field up on the hill past the power company, well that is where Jay had is first real baseball game. When Jay started playing baseball I was so excited. Actually, when he was born and the doc put him in my arms, I thank the good Lord and immediately thought baseball. Finally a boy!!!! After two girls.  One afternoon (around 5 or 6 o'clock) we were headed to the ball field for his first game, and just about the time the light turns green at our one and only intersection he says Jay:  Mama I don't think I can play against my friends. Me:  About to stroke out, WHY Jay:  'Cause I just wanna be their friend. Me:  Oh, y'all will still be friends. This is just for fun. Jay :  Even if my team wins? Me:   Sure. Now the year before was a little different ..... t-ball. He caught on real fast how that worked. One time we pulled up to the ball field and we all got out but Jay stayed in the car. Me: Oh, hurry son. Jay:  I think I'll just sit

Moving On Up

I know y'all have had this to happen to you or maybe not, but for me when something really important or a tragedy happens I can remember exactly where I was or where I was standing. Well this is one of those cases. I think this was late Fall 1976, Sammy was talking on the phone to a friend, who had only been in Florida maybe a month or so and had recently moved from Florence. They had worked together at WOWL and WQLT radio, he was a DJ too. Anyway this friend called and told him there was an opening at this radio station, WQYK in St. Petersburg Florida. He wanted to know if he was interested. I was standing in the doorway of our kitchen and Sammy turns around and says, "How'd you like to move to Florida." It kinda took me by surprise and I thought..... Florida!!!!! Gosh thats so far from home but I married him for better or worse, is this gonna be for the better or worse. ( I know its gonna be for the worse when  mama Helen gets wind of this) We talked about it and d

Young and Dumb

After graduating from high school, I got tired of sitting around the house and decided to get out and look for a job. We lived in Florence, Al. but for some reason I started looking for a job in Muscle Shoals which was about 10- 15 minutes from the house. By this time we had moved from our first purple basement apartment to a rented house. We really didn't stay at this place very long because there was this dang mouse we couldn't catch and I'm terrified of mice. Also we came home one day and Samson (our dog) was in the toilet. I told Sammy I bet that mouse scared him and he jumped in. Honestly his water bowl might have been empty and he just got thirsty. I'll tell ya this, we never found him in the toilet ever again. We Moved!!!! I went to work at a place called Woolco, it was like a Wal mart and I applied for a job and they hired me that day. Must have been desperate that day!!!  I was over the music department, of course. lol!!! It was a pretty cool job. I could wor

Lets go to the races.

I hope I can write this as funny and it was. It might be one of those stories, you just had to be there, but I'm real glad you weren't. I know Sammy is smiling already. One summer our family decided to go on vacation to Panama City. Now when I say our family that means aunts, uncles, grandmas and cousins.  Like 17 of us. One Big Happy Family!! Well a day or so after we got there some of us wanted to go to the dog tracks cause some of us had never been. Mama wouldn't go with us. She said, we were all going to hell for going. My grandmother, Mama Helen stayed with her but slipped us some money for her dog. Now, I don't know how much you are supposed to spend on a dog, and none of us was rich, so about a dollar was all they were a gettin' from us "big spenders". Mama had done scared me so I told Sammy I'd just watch cause I didn't wanna go to hell. Well we had to pick us out a dog to holler for, and I loved naming dogs around our house ( just ask t

Happy Belated Grandparents Day

Well they say Sunday was Grandparents day. Apparently, the Huntleys and the Clarks forgot I had two grandsons. He he!! How long has that been around?  I mush have missed it cause I forgot daddy and mama all these years. My girls learned from the best. Don't think they had that when I was growing up but, never the less, let me tell you about my grandparents. My maternal grandparents were Russell and Otha (Pet) Medley. Russell, my papa died when I was real young, oh, maybe I was in the fourth grade. What I can remember of him was, he was a loving and a giving man.  He would come over to our house every morning before school and would give me a quarter or two to put in my piggy bank. Otha, Mama Pet, got the name "Pet" when she was young. Story has it when she was young she fell over a plow and she became somewhat crippled and her family petted her a lot, so she became Pet. She owned a florist called "Medley's Florist" for years and mama worked for her.  I woul

I can see you.

You can imagine how quiet my house has been for the last 4-6 months, especially at night, but not this past weekend.(Labor Day) I think I saw our house smiling and shaking with laughter at times. You see my two little Grandbabies and their moms and dads spent the whole weekend with me. Yep, we had a sleep- over, dogs and all. Sometimes, I would catch myself thinking, I sure hope there are holes in the floor of Heaven, so they can see what we are doing down here. Several years ago, late in the afternoon I had cooked dinner and I was trying to find all the kids to come to the table to eat. Hey, I gotta tell ya, I'm not the best cook but we got by. Normally I wouldn't have to call the kids to come eat, they could here it. Yeah, hear it!!! The smoke detector!!!! I remember one time one of the girls had a friend over and that thing went off. I heard them say, dinners ready. (like one went off in every househole, they thought nothing of it)  You know that made me smile.....NOT. N
